Christmas Celebrations!

Okay, I can breathe now and write up a post. Just finished our Community Christmas Celebration weekend at Roswell Street and what a wonderful time we had!! Great crowds...total of about 2200 folks attended, 14 decisions for Christ, 82 churches represented that came to hear us sing, lots of fun, gorgeous music, beautiful ballet dancers, a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace halfway through the program (one of my favorite moments), and, of course, the Hallelujah Chorus por fin! All this occurred after a very busy week of decorating the church and getting everything ready. We have two 15-foot trees in the worship center plus wreaths, garland, banners, etc. We had completed almost everything when there was a calamity! Wednesday afternoon one of the trees broke...the base, that is. Had to rescue the poor man who was trying to hold it up, take off the decorations, take the tree apart, get the stand to a welder, get it back the next day, tree back together, re-decorate. Whew.

There were 250 people involved in our program. These were banner carriers, choir (111), orchestra (43), children's choirs (70), wise men, shepherds, Baby Jesus and Mary, angels, and on and on. We had a blast! Here are some pics!
Decorating the tree that later broke.  All turned out okay though!

We joke that my boss has good life insurance...he is fearless!

Amazing Grace
We had 16 beautiful banners
Adorable!
Our Christmas Celebration!
Hallelujah Chorus with Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus
Dancer during "Sing Gloria!"
My daughter was Mary again this year with a "borrowed" Baby Jesus...so sweet!
"A Baby Changes Everything"
My boss who puts it all together...our minister of music. Excellence!

 PART II of Christmas Celebrations!

SECRETARIES' PARTY! My favorite party of the year is the secretaries' party. All of us assistants/secretaries get together and bring the most wonderful food. Lots of spinach dip, mexican dip, chips, cheesy stuff, various appetizers, desserts like homemade truffles, cupcakes, cookies, flavored coffees, hot chocolate and on and on. We have fun eating and relaxing and exchange our Secret Santa gifts. Then it's the "white elephant" gift exchange! This can be hilarious! This year I found the perfect gift in a basement closet at the church. It was a terrible painting of Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist. Jesus and John were naked babies. Needless to say, it got passed around a bit. We even put magnets over strategic locations. HA! There were other gifts such as salad flavor dental floss, broken clock, ugly tablecloth, terrible mugs, musical tie, 3D glasses. I ended up with a book called "How Not to Look Old". I do need that...I plan to read a bit a day to figure out some tips on maintaining my youth. Here are some pics:
Our friend Cheryl....she first thought this gift was a garter! She was a bit embarrassed.
Carmen gets the exquisite piece of art!
Magnets strategically placed.
I love these ladies!
Angie's beautiful pink and green Christmas tree! She's a wonderful hostess.

No Rhyme or Reason

I'm such a terrible blogger. :) I'm in the midst of an extreme time at my job and my mind is totally consumed by the different assignments I have been given as we get ready for our "amazing" Christmas presentation at Roswell Street. That word "amazing" is just a hint of the surprises to come in that 90 minute concert of music.

We have concentrated heavily on advertising this year. We do a little of it normally but not like this. We have two nights of concerts and we'd love to fill the church each night as it will really be a time of worship and joy and beautiful music. My boss decided we'd do 10 flyer campaigns. I'm doing the 9th one tonight with the help of friends at a Brandon Heath concert at our church. Then the 10th is an invitation mail out to 500 families that have been visitors in the past at either these seasonal events or fall festivals or Upward basketball, VBS, etc. YES...we have kept their names and addresses for such a time as this! :) We've invited 30 nursing homes to bring a group of senior adults also. We have contacts with these folks already in that our Sr. Adult Choir visits these homes every 2 weeks throughout the fall and spring. We shall see what happens. I'm praying that this special concert will touch lives and hearts for Jesus.

On personal news, I just had "MOHS" surgery a few weeks ago. That is a skin cancer surgery that is very unique. I had a basal cell cancer near my temple. Because it is at a tender spot and in the hairline they chose to do this. The doctor took what he thought was all of the cancer and immediately took it to a lab while I sat in the chair and waited. He examined it and determined more needed to be done. Back to me and more cutting. Thank the Lord it only took 2 times but they got it all and stitched me up with 12 stitches. Now it is healing nicely and shouldn't be too obvious a scar. When MOHS is done the cancer rarely returns.

We are enjoying the beautiful colors of fall right now. I'm watching the leaves fall like rain as I type this. It has been a gorgeous season. It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here. I've yet to begin Christmas shopping. Between all this work and the Christmas program and parties at church and work and with family, I'm going to have to get in the "DO IT" mood and spend one day out and get it done. I work best that way actually.

Well, off to see the gbabies and then to work tonight. I love my full life. NO complaining here.

Later...

GRACE (by Laura Story)

My heart is so proud. My mind is so unfocused.
I see the things You do through me as great things I have done.
And now You gently break me, then lovingly You take me
And hold me as my Father and mold me as my Maker.

Chorus:
I ask you: "How many times will You pick me up, when I keep on letting you down?
And each time I will fall short of Your glory, how far will forgiveness abound?"
And You answer: " My child, I love you.
And as long as you're seeking My face, You'll walk in the pow'r of My daily sufficient grace."

At times I may grow weak and feel a bit discouraged,
knowing that someone, somewhere could do a better job.
For who am I to serve You?I know I don't deserve You.
And that's the part that burns in my heart and keeps me hanging on.

Chorus*
I ask you: "How many times will you pick me up, when I keep on letting You down?
And each time I will fall short of Your glory, how far will forgiveness abound?"
And You answer: " My child, I love you.
And as long as you're seeking My face, You'll walk in the pow'r of My daily sufficient grace."
You are so patient with me, Lord.

As I walk with You, I'm learning what Your grace really means.
The price that I could never pay was paid at Calvary.
So, instead of trying to repay You, I'm learning to simply obey You
By giving up my life to you for all that You've given to me.

The Highland Games with Madison and Uncle Steve!

Stone Mountain in October...Scottish Highland Games...Beautiful, fall day with temperature in the 70s...Gorgeous autumn sky and sun...There's something about the way the sunlight falls through the changing leaves that just makes me happy.  We met Stephen there and brought sweet Maddie along with us. She is such fun to take with us on outings. We need to do that more often.
On our way into the park.  Bagpipes were playing loudly...
One of the many Highland bands...pipes and drums!
Meeting up with Uncle Stephen...Maddie warmed up soon after.
Maddie was fascinated by the hawk.

Scotland of Old...lots of culture today!
Tartans of many clans

McLaughlin/MacLachlan...same difference

People take their roles seriously here at the Games

Listening to Scottish rock music and taking a coloring break!

These guys were good!

A Scottish Lady

Poor "Whack-a-Knight"

John and Stephen really did eat Haggis and Chips (sheep meat cooked in a sheep stomach) Ewww!

The athletes toss a caber (looks like a telephone pole to me)

Balancing the extremely heavy caber

Tossing it! It has to fall to the other side to count.

Maddie loves her some "diet"...

Grandmommy...I found an acorn and a pine cone!

Maddie wasn't too crazy about this swordfight.
Just too much fun!
Quiet ride home.

Faithfulness

"Blessed is the man whose delight is...the law of the Lord...he shall be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, ready to bring forth fruit in its season; its leaf shall not fade and wither and everything he does will prosper" from Psalm 1

The following is a devotional that got my attention.  Oh, to be faithful to God like this and gain the rewards and blessings He has for me. I've got a lot of work and soul-searching to do. I am weak.

Faithfulness
". . . choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve."   ~Joshua 24:15

Is there a god that you need to lay down?
A god that will prevent you from living out your God-given potential and destiny?  Are there any idols that lurk in your heart?
God will be faithful to us if we are faithful to Him and His ways.  Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Is God truly our first love?  Are we willing to lay everything that is important and valuable to us down at the foot of the cross to serve Him?
If our answer is "yes," then we exchange our ways for His, which are much higher and which include rewards far greater than we can earn on our own.

The question then becomes, "Do we truly trust God to deliver?"
If the answer is again "yes," then we will embark on an adventure of loving and serving Him on a whole new level that will result in fresh assignments, fresh revelation, fresh opportunities for trusting Him in new areas, fresh opportunities to overcome obstacles and greater measures of blessings to receive, pressed down, shaken together and running over (Luke 6:38).  Is this not life worth living?  This is indeed God's finest for us, and it is anything but boring!

Faithfulness requires discipline in the journey, and it requires a cleansing of the heart at the outset.  Anything less will harbor a contamination that will ultimately lead us to stumble and fall and possibly to not even finish the race God has set before us.  At the very least, the journey will be rocky.

Faithfulness is obedience that builds trust in relationships.  "Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.  Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped . . . and serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:14).

Hospital and Surgery Blues

The surgical unit was perfect...seemed that way to me. From the moment we parked in the lot(where we were picked up by a sweet little old man driving a golf cart at 5 am) until the end of the surgery, all was great. No complaints here. And I'm really not one to complain. These little incidents just struck me funny. My husband had shoulder-replacement surgery a few days ago. Great surgeon, wonderful surgical nurses, organized to the last detail, very efficient.

Then he left the surgical unit.

I asked where he'd been taken. Oh, yes, ma'am they said. He's in room 446. Off I go to the elevator juggling all my bags of stuff that will help the day pass quickly (including my trusty laptop). Get off at the 4th floor. Numbers 440-470 this way....through the doors of the CCU (coronary care unit). Hmmm. I wonder if they just had issues with too many patients, not enough rooms. I see the nurses station and ask for this room. Oh, yes ma'am, here he is. I follow her to the room. In the bed, an approximately 90 year old man. Lying there. Mouth open. Snoring. Whoa!! I said, mistake here. My husband had shoulder-replacement surgery. (And he's only 55)!! Finally, through computer searches and phone calls they locate John. New room number. I go to those doors. NO ENTRY. Okay. Nurse walks by and says, oh yes,ma'am, you have to go down to the 3rd floor, go to the red elevators and back up to the 4th floor. That'll get you to his room. Cool. I finally find the man.

Long day, John is happily feeling nothing after a strong nerve block in his shoulder. I go home at sunset to get a good night's sleep. No place to sleep in that room anyway.

In the morning, I return. Breakfast was good, John said. (By the way, this hospital food WAS good...both "room service" and the cafe.) John's settling down for a morning nap. He's on Percocet, you know. Starting to snore. An important-looking man comes in and asks him to sit in a chair. We got new beds for the whole floor, he says. We're taking your bed and bringing you a great new one. Okay. Out rolls the bed. Twenty minutes go by. John sits in the chair in his short little hospital gown and snoozes off, upright, of course. Mouth open, snoring. Upright. No bed. I tell someone. Okay, we'll be back with the bed. Another 20 minutes goes by. Still no bed. I stand in the doorway this time and just point into the room as personnel walk by. Anyone who will look at me. Oh,yes ma'am...we're getting the bed now. Another 20 minutes. John's nurse walks in ready to check his vitals, etc. I just point again. He has no bed, I say. For the last hour. She is embarrassed and apologizes. Well, I cared more than John did. After all, he was on Percocet. No problema! Finally, the bed arrives. Oh, by the way, they'd run out of the new beds. He got an old one. HA!!

Throughout the 36 hours there, I saw a gorgeous sunset through the hospital room window, ate an excellent prime rib sandwich with cheese and pepper mayo from the cafe, heard a code called in CCU (hope it wasn't my 90 year old man), heard the nurse questioning the patient next door about his fight with his brother-in-law that landed him there (hit four times, he said), met some very sweet, caring nursing assistants, nurses and food services personnel, watched physical therapy in the hallways, rode many elevators, got lost 3 times, paid ten dollars in parking fees, and overall had a decent experience. Quite different from the maternity experiences I've had with my daughter. That's happy stuff. Now we're home. These are painful "get through it" days with fever, swelling, lots of pain pills and no showers for a week because of the bandages. Phew!! Can't be helped. John will have great range of motion and lots less pain after he recovers. Looking forward to that!

Almost Autumn

Ah! I can feel it in the air today.  The high was low 80s, no humidity, and the way the sunlight falls is changing. I feel autumn close by.  Still another few weeks of warmer weather but the colors will start to show soon and the days are already shorter.  My daughter and I celebrated the season yesterday as we went to our favorite place to stroll and shop and let the babies enjoy the fountains, sidewalks, and cookies at a bakery where we sat outside.
Big girl Maddie (and Landon's feet...ha)

September is a month of birthdays for our family.  Today is my mom's.  We celebrated at their house with Publix fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese (thank you, Vicki..YUM!), veggies, and a special strawberry cake brought from a Birmingham bakery by my sister's family.  My mom celebrated her 70-something birthday by getting her ears pierced! I was amazed! Hooray. Now we know what to get her for Christmas!  She and my dad are just surprising us all the time. Dad just finished and self-published a book with Amazon.com called The Chattahoochee Boys.  It's about his childhood/teen years in the Whittier Mill Village near Atlanta. Very interesting and lots of sweet and funny stories.

Birthday boy Landon will have his party next week as he turns ONE.  Can't believe that! He's the sweetest, smiling-est baby ever.  He does seem to be showing some strong-willed character but his smile and beautiful blue eyes just disarm me. He'll be a toughie to say NO to...ha!

At the end of the month we celebrate my son's 27th birthday (WHAT!!!? I'm not old enough to have a 27 year old son!) and my nephew's 5th birthday.  They are both quite handsome! And sweet! And smart!
Rachel and Stephen...suhweet! (I'm proud of them both)

Matthew! (One of Maddie's favorite people)
All this to say, I'm loving the season we're entering. It's really my favorite all year.  I am thankful to God for His many blessings on our family.

Now finally, for someone I love who is facing much discouragement.  Fight the good fight...don't lose your focus...

Be still, there is a healer
His love is deeper than the sea
His mercy, it is unfailing
His arms are a fortress for the weak

Let faith arise
Let faith arise

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember
You are faithful, God, forever

Be still, there is a river
That flows from Calvary's tree
A fountain for the thirsty
Pure grace that washes over me

So let faith arise
Let faith arise
Open my eyes
Open my eyes

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember
You are faithful, God
You are faithful, God, forever
