GRACE (by Laura Story)

My heart is so proud. My mind is so unfocused.
I see the things You do through me as great things I have done.
And now You gently break me, then lovingly You take me
And hold me as my Father and mold me as my Maker.

Chorus:
I ask you: "How many times will You pick me up, when I keep on letting you down?
And each time I will fall short of Your glory, how far will forgiveness abound?"
And You answer: " My child, I love you.
And as long as you're seeking My face, You'll walk in the pow'r of My daily sufficient grace."

At times I may grow weak and feel a bit discouraged,
knowing that someone, somewhere could do a better job.
For who am I to serve You?I know I don't deserve You.
And that's the part that burns in my heart and keeps me hanging on.

Chorus*
I ask you: "How many times will you pick me up, when I keep on letting You down?
And each time I will fall short of Your glory, how far will forgiveness abound?"
And You answer: " My child, I love you.
And as long as you're seeking My face, You'll walk in the pow'r of My daily sufficient grace."
You are so patient with me, Lord.

As I walk with You, I'm learning what Your grace really means.
The price that I could never pay was paid at Calvary.
So, instead of trying to repay You, I'm learning to simply obey You
By giving up my life to you for all that You've given to me.

The Highland Games with Madison and Uncle Steve!

Stone Mountain in October...Scottish Highland Games...Beautiful, fall day with temperature in the 70s...Gorgeous autumn sky and sun...There's something about the way the sunlight falls through the changing leaves that just makes me happy.  We met Stephen there and brought sweet Maddie along with us. She is such fun to take with us on outings. We need to do that more often.
On our way into the park.  Bagpipes were playing loudly...
One of the many Highland bands...pipes and drums!
Meeting up with Uncle Stephen...Maddie warmed up soon after.
Maddie was fascinated by the hawk.

Scotland of Old...lots of culture today!
Tartans of many clans

McLaughlin/MacLachlan...same difference

People take their roles seriously here at the Games

Listening to Scottish rock music and taking a coloring break!

These guys were good!

A Scottish Lady

Poor "Whack-a-Knight"

John and Stephen really did eat Haggis and Chips (sheep meat cooked in a sheep stomach) Ewww!

The athletes toss a caber (looks like a telephone pole to me)

Balancing the extremely heavy caber

Tossing it! It has to fall to the other side to count.

Maddie loves her some "diet"...

Grandmommy...I found an acorn and a pine cone!

Maddie wasn't too crazy about this swordfight.
Just too much fun!
Quiet ride home.

Faithfulness

"Blessed is the man whose delight is...the law of the Lord...he shall be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, ready to bring forth fruit in its season; its leaf shall not fade and wither and everything he does will prosper" from Psalm 1

The following is a devotional that got my attention.  Oh, to be faithful to God like this and gain the rewards and blessings He has for me. I've got a lot of work and soul-searching to do. I am weak.

Faithfulness
". . . choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve."   ~Joshua 24:15

Is there a god that you need to lay down?
A god that will prevent you from living out your God-given potential and destiny?  Are there any idols that lurk in your heart?
God will be faithful to us if we are faithful to Him and His ways.  Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Is God truly our first love?  Are we willing to lay everything that is important and valuable to us down at the foot of the cross to serve Him?
If our answer is "yes," then we exchange our ways for His, which are much higher and which include rewards far greater than we can earn on our own.

The question then becomes, "Do we truly trust God to deliver?"
If the answer is again "yes," then we will embark on an adventure of loving and serving Him on a whole new level that will result in fresh assignments, fresh revelation, fresh opportunities for trusting Him in new areas, fresh opportunities to overcome obstacles and greater measures of blessings to receive, pressed down, shaken together and running over (Luke 6:38).  Is this not life worth living?  This is indeed God's finest for us, and it is anything but boring!

Faithfulness requires discipline in the journey, and it requires a cleansing of the heart at the outset.  Anything less will harbor a contamination that will ultimately lead us to stumble and fall and possibly to not even finish the race God has set before us.  At the very least, the journey will be rocky.

Faithfulness is obedience that builds trust in relationships.  "Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.  Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped . . . and serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:14).

Hospital and Surgery Blues

The surgical unit was perfect...seemed that way to me. From the moment we parked in the lot(where we were picked up by a sweet little old man driving a golf cart at 5 am) until the end of the surgery, all was great. No complaints here. And I'm really not one to complain. These little incidents just struck me funny. My husband had shoulder-replacement surgery a few days ago. Great surgeon, wonderful surgical nurses, organized to the last detail, very efficient.

Then he left the surgical unit.

I asked where he'd been taken. Oh, yes, ma'am they said. He's in room 446. Off I go to the elevator juggling all my bags of stuff that will help the day pass quickly (including my trusty laptop). Get off at the 4th floor. Numbers 440-470 this way....through the doors of the CCU (coronary care unit). Hmmm. I wonder if they just had issues with too many patients, not enough rooms. I see the nurses station and ask for this room. Oh, yes ma'am, here he is. I follow her to the room. In the bed, an approximately 90 year old man. Lying there. Mouth open. Snoring. Whoa!! I said, mistake here. My husband had shoulder-replacement surgery. (And he's only 55)!! Finally, through computer searches and phone calls they locate John. New room number. I go to those doors. NO ENTRY. Okay. Nurse walks by and says, oh yes,ma'am, you have to go down to the 3rd floor, go to the red elevators and back up to the 4th floor. That'll get you to his room. Cool. I finally find the man.

Long day, John is happily feeling nothing after a strong nerve block in his shoulder. I go home at sunset to get a good night's sleep. No place to sleep in that room anyway.

In the morning, I return. Breakfast was good, John said. (By the way, this hospital food WAS good...both "room service" and the cafe.) John's settling down for a morning nap. He's on Percocet, you know. Starting to snore. An important-looking man comes in and asks him to sit in a chair. We got new beds for the whole floor, he says. We're taking your bed and bringing you a great new one. Okay. Out rolls the bed. Twenty minutes go by. John sits in the chair in his short little hospital gown and snoozes off, upright, of course. Mouth open, snoring. Upright. No bed. I tell someone. Okay, we'll be back with the bed. Another 20 minutes goes by. Still no bed. I stand in the doorway this time and just point into the room as personnel walk by. Anyone who will look at me. Oh,yes ma'am...we're getting the bed now. Another 20 minutes. John's nurse walks in ready to check his vitals, etc. I just point again. He has no bed, I say. For the last hour. She is embarrassed and apologizes. Well, I cared more than John did. After all, he was on Percocet. No problema! Finally, the bed arrives. Oh, by the way, they'd run out of the new beds. He got an old one. HA!!

Throughout the 36 hours there, I saw a gorgeous sunset through the hospital room window, ate an excellent prime rib sandwich with cheese and pepper mayo from the cafe, heard a code called in CCU (hope it wasn't my 90 year old man), heard the nurse questioning the patient next door about his fight with his brother-in-law that landed him there (hit four times, he said), met some very sweet, caring nursing assistants, nurses and food services personnel, watched physical therapy in the hallways, rode many elevators, got lost 3 times, paid ten dollars in parking fees, and overall had a decent experience. Quite different from the maternity experiences I've had with my daughter. That's happy stuff. Now we're home. These are painful "get through it" days with fever, swelling, lots of pain pills and no showers for a week because of the bandages. Phew!! Can't be helped. John will have great range of motion and lots less pain after he recovers. Looking forward to that!

Almost Autumn

Ah! I can feel it in the air today.  The high was low 80s, no humidity, and the way the sunlight falls is changing. I feel autumn close by.  Still another few weeks of warmer weather but the colors will start to show soon and the days are already shorter.  My daughter and I celebrated the season yesterday as we went to our favorite place to stroll and shop and let the babies enjoy the fountains, sidewalks, and cookies at a bakery where we sat outside.
Big girl Maddie (and Landon's feet...ha)

September is a month of birthdays for our family.  Today is my mom's.  We celebrated at their house with Publix fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese (thank you, Vicki..YUM!), veggies, and a special strawberry cake brought from a Birmingham bakery by my sister's family.  My mom celebrated her 70-something birthday by getting her ears pierced! I was amazed! Hooray. Now we know what to get her for Christmas!  She and my dad are just surprising us all the time. Dad just finished and self-published a book with Amazon.com called The Chattahoochee Boys.  It's about his childhood/teen years in the Whittier Mill Village near Atlanta. Very interesting and lots of sweet and funny stories.

Birthday boy Landon will have his party next week as he turns ONE.  Can't believe that! He's the sweetest, smiling-est baby ever.  He does seem to be showing some strong-willed character but his smile and beautiful blue eyes just disarm me. He'll be a toughie to say NO to...ha!

At the end of the month we celebrate my son's 27th birthday (WHAT!!!? I'm not old enough to have a 27 year old son!) and my nephew's 5th birthday.  They are both quite handsome! And sweet! And smart!
Rachel and Stephen...suhweet! (I'm proud of them both)

Matthew! (One of Maddie's favorite people)
All this to say, I'm loving the season we're entering. It's really my favorite all year.  I am thankful to God for His many blessings on our family.

Now finally, for someone I love who is facing much discouragement.  Fight the good fight...don't lose your focus...

Be still, there is a healer
His love is deeper than the sea
His mercy, it is unfailing
His arms are a fortress for the weak

Let faith arise
Let faith arise

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember
You are faithful, God, forever

Be still, there is a river
That flows from Calvary's tree
A fountain for the thirsty
Pure grace that washes over me

So let faith arise
Let faith arise
Open my eyes
Open my eyes

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember
You are faithful, God
You are faithful, God, forever

Ramblin'

I'm sitting here in a quiet, cool, dark house and listening out for the gbabies as they nap.  Their mommy has gone to a consignment sale all alone and she is so happy to be able to do that!  Little things mean a lot to a mom of a baby and a 2 year old.  I'm content to sit here and ramble on my blog.

It's amazing how a good night's sleep changes my outlook and makes me a little more cheerful.  Lately I've been sleeping regularly from 11pm-4 am. Then I wake up...wide awake....no going back to sleep...just like an alarm clock my eyes pop open at 4. Then I can't quiet my brain down. I start thinking about things I need to do at work or things I forgot to do. Why do I remember those things at 4 am? Crazy. But last night I slept so well after an extremely busy week. I think I counted up that I put in 47 hours in 4 days at work.  Good way to lose weight, too. No time to eat and when there was time I was too tired.  Anyway, I do not begrudge the time. We had a wonderful time with our Christmas in August party with 96 in attendance...even more really with family and orchestra folk also.  Our music is going to be even more beautiful than last year.  I was able to sit in and watch my boss put this program together this year and, as I told him, it was "dang impressive"! Ha! He's very creative and you have to be to do what he does. No creativity given to me.  Oh, well. I can enjoy that of others.

Today I am spending my usual Friday off with the babies and we just returned from Walmart.  I walked away from the buggy for a second and turned around just in time to see my grandson standing up in the seat. Yikes! He has some new skills.  Glad my daughter saw him in time! Grandmommy has to get with the program and have some common sense here.

I am looking forward to the month of September.  There are 4 birthdays in our family...my mom, son, grandson, and nephew.  Also have 2 weddings to attend. And my husband will be having shoulder replacement surgery.  Have you ever heard of that? Never knew that was possible. It's different from rotator cuff surgery.  He'll wear a sling for 6 weeks and have lots of physical therapy.  We are praying that this will relieve the pain he's been in and give him more range of motion.

I'm excited to have started participating in our women's Bible study on Wednesday mornings at church.  I'm making up my work time on other days and I appreciate being able to do that.   I'm doing the "Amazing Collection". This is a study of all the books of the Bible and this particular one is 1 & 2 Peter, Titus, and Philemon.  I enjoy being with the ladies that I don't get to see often. We always have some great food and singing also.  It's a very worthwhile 2 hours.

Okay, done with my ramblin'. I see a baby stirring around about to wake up.

Psalm 16:

 5 LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;
   you make my lot secure.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I keep my eyes always on the LORD.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

This and That (or God is Good)

So it's been long enough, right? I seem to have a writer's block going on. Nothing much to write about. My life is just going on its daily rhythm of home, work, church, family, grandchildren, friends. My life is very full and I'm so thankful!  I know that any time things could change. So I do NOT take these times for granted.

Been doing some reading.  There is a really good book called Choosing Rest by Sally Breedlove.  Full of much insight in how we tend to want problems totally solved before we feel like we can rest.  But sometimes problems just aren't solved in a day or a week or a month or a year. I have one myself that has gone on for a year. I struggle with it often but it is still not solved. It could be me...that I'm not totally giving it up to Him...or it could be that He just wants to keep teaching me through it. I have to admit I've learned some things...like self-control, like humility, like I'm not as strong as I thought I was.  So, I am to put my burden on Him and then rest.  Another aspect of rest that she talks about is timing. The Lord created our world...the evening and the morning were the first day, the second day, etc. We should look at our evenings and night's sleep as the preparation for the work we do the next day. Rest comes first then work. Not work then rest.  I'm trying to change my outlook on that.

RSBC Choir in last year's presentation

Children, Choir, Orchestra, in our Worship Center during 2010 Christmas presentation
I'm very busy at work.  Christmas in August is a ritual for us in church music ministry.  We are getting ready to introduce our choirs and orchestra to the Christmas presentation our minister of music has chosen. It is a long process and it is always amazing to me how he chooses and puts together just the right music and elements for a beautiful presentation that blesses and moves people spiritually and emotionally during that special time of year. We'll have a "Christmas in August" party for everyone, complete with "cookie swap" and other treats.

My two JOYS

Erin and Brad

Stephen and Rachel
Our children are doing very well. We are thankful for their good health and happiness.  Our son and daughter-in-law have settled well into married life and she is getting ready to start her 3rd year of pharmacy school at UGA.  She's brainy as well as beautiful.  We are enjoying getting to know her family and we're just happy that Stephen has someone to take care of him now and force him to eat healthfully! HA. She's a great cook.  Our other kids, daughter Erin and son-in-law Brad and the most precious beautiful grandchildren ever :) haha are also doing wonderfully well. We are very thankful that our daughter can stay home with the babies as Brad is a good provider with a great job in the school system.  The children are thriving and happy. Maddie is quite the talker, artist, and loving little girl.  She sometimes goes into an "evil voice" as we call it...to try to get her way or just to be funny. It's a deep, gravelly voice. Very funny!! Her beautiful, bright red hair is growing longer and she is just pure JOY to us.  Landon is trying to walk and is getting into all sorts of trouble. As Erin says, he's attracted to everything that is dangerous...outlets, wires, electrical stuff, steps, etc. He's a mess and is hard to resist with his clear blue eyes and constant smile!

So, there's the update. Parents are good, my mom is recovering from a broken ankle. It's healed now but giving her problems still.  My husband is still enjoying his job and is doing well...running 3 times a week.  We are both very thankful for jobs that we love and good health and the fact that the Lord always provides for us no matter how little we make. :)  A bad day at a job we love is much better than $$..  And we don't have many bad days!  Our church means so much to us and we are happy to be involved there in choir, nursery, greeter ministry, etc.  We are still one of the few churches around that has Sunday night services and we enjoy those "deeper" studies of the Bible.

Like I said, I don't have a terribly exciting life but it's good! God is good. I don't take it lightly!
